Many of Bolivia's Finest Specimen & Proof Banknotes

Bolivia has some of the most beautiful banknotes, with intricate vignettes and vivid colors. The country is also one of the few that has outstanding vignettes on the back side of its banknotes; many of these are shown below. The early notes were issued by 10 bancos (Agricola, Boliviano, Bolivia y Londres, Comercia, Francisco Argandona, Industrial de la Paz, Industrial, Mercantil, Nacional de Bolivia, and Potosi). Beginning in 1902, the Republic began issuing banknotes, with Banco Central de Bolivia beginning issuances in the late 1920s.

A high percentage of the early Bolivian notes graded by PMG are specimens and proofs, and many have only a single graded example showing up in the population report. The specimen notes were generally stamped with Specimen, Muestra, Muestra Sin Valor, and/or ESpecimen, and each specimen had a serial number comprised of all zeros.
