Many of China's Finest Specimen & Proof Banknotes

Banknotes from China seem to be particularly popular. China appears to have issued a greater variety of banknotes over the decades than any other country. Many of these China banknotes are quite well designed and very colorful. Ming Dynasty notes from the years 1368 through 1450 or so are rare. Banknotes from the Ch'ing Dynasty (1644-1911) are somewhat available, but they do not usually have the great vignettes shown on China notes from later years. China banknotes from the subsequent years of the Republic are mostly quite attractive and have developed a large collector base. There were many Chinese issuing agencies during those years.

The PMG population report shows that many of the China banknotes are rare in the upper grades. In many cases, the only gem-quality notes graded by PMG are specimens and proofs; those collecting only issued notes must settle for lower grades.

A Sampling of Beautiful Issued Notes from China

Many Chinese banknote collectors have a preference for notes that have been issued for circulation. Most of the older issued notes, however, are quite scarce and even non-existent in the higher grades. The does not seem to deter the collector base, as pricing for even well-circulated examples is often quite robust.

We display below a number of issued notes selected for their rarity and beauty. The PMG population report indicates that these notes are rare in these grades.
