Many of Costa Rica's Finest Specimen & Proof Banknotes

Costa Rica has some of the world's most beautiful banknotes. The country was established as a republic in 1848, and it began issuing banknotes in 1865. Some of the most striking notes were issued between 1918 and 1925 by Banco Internacional de Costa Rica. Most of the specialized notes issued by the country's eight private banks (Banco Anglo-Costarricense, Banco Comercial de Costa Rica, Banco de Costa Rica, Banco Herediano, Banco Mercantil de Costa Rica, Banco Nacional de Costa Rica, Banco Rural de Credito Hipotecario de Costa Rica, and Banco de la Union) are also beautiful. There was a railroad issue of banknotes in 1872 (Ferro Carril de Costa Rica). A large percentage of the Costa Rican banknotes highly graded by PMG are specimens, proofs, and remainders rather than issued notes, and many of the surviving ones are in a high state of preservation.
