Many of Guatemala's Finest Specimen & Proof Banknotes

The government of Guatemala began issuing banknotes circa 1881, under the name La Tesoreria Nacional de Guatemala. These early banknotes had outstanding vignettes and bright colors. The issuances by the government continued through 1902, after which the banknotes were issued by Banco Central de Guatemala (1926-36) and Banco de Guatemala (beginning in 1946). There were also nine banks that issued notes during the years 1874 through 1926. Many of these notes also had highly attractive vignettes, and many were printed in large format.

The PMG world banknote population report shows that most of the early banknotes from Guatemala are quite scarce. Many of the issues have had only a single note graded by PMG. Specimens and proofs account for a significant percentage of the graded notes from the early years, particularly those from the 1800s.
