Many of Honduras' Finest Specimen & Proof Banknotes

The Republic of Honduras became achieved its independence in 1821.  The country's earliest banknotes (pre-1886) lacked strong design elements and made only limited use of color.  Beginning in 1886, however, the country's six specialized banks (Aguan Navigation and Improvement Company, Banco Atlantida, Banco Centro-Americano, Banco de Comercia, Banco Nacional de Honduras, and Banco Nacional Hondureno) issued many series of well designed and very colorful banknotes.  Banco de Honduras began issuances in 1889, followed by Banco Central de Honduras in 1950.

PMG’s world banknotes population report shows an absence of PMG-graded notes prior to 1889.  The more-recent vintages have strong representation, but many of the notes have only a single note graded.  Most of the graded notes are specimens and proofs, and the percentage of those in gem-quality grades is high.  The American Bank Note Company archives probably accounted for the availability of most of these notes.
