WORLD BANKNOTES 360 - NICARAGUA

Many of Nicaragua's Finest Specimen & Proof Banknotes

The Republic of Nicaragua became an independent republic in 1838. Republica de Nicaragua began issuing banknotes in 1880, followed by Banco Nacional de Nicaragua beginning in 1912. Only a handful of specialized banks issued notes: Banco Agricola-Mercantil (1888); Banco de Centro America y Londres (1889); and Banco de Nicaragua (1889 and 1890). Although some of the Nicaraguan banknotes had outstanding designs and colors, the variety of artistically attractive notes is not as large as that of many other countries.

The PMG world banknote population report shows that the number of PMG-graded notes from Nicaragua is significantly lower than that from many other countries, and few of those Nicaraguan notes that are graded date from 1910 or earlier. Many of the early graded specimen and proof examples were printed by the American Bank Note Company and are likely from the ABNC archives.
