Many of Venezuela's Finest Specimen & Proof Banknotes

The United States of Venezuela issued its first Treasury banknotes in 1811, and Republica de Venezuela began issuing notes in 1859. The country's particularly striking banknotes were issued mostly by 11 bancos, beginning in 1876. The vignettes were outstanding, often highlighting some of Venezuela's resources, including oil, farming, cattle, and shipping. A number of the banknotes were oversized. Beginning in 1940, Banco Central de Venezuela began printing notes in more-conservative designs.

The PMG world banknote population report shows that that most of the early Venezuelan banknotes are scarce. A high percentage of the early examples graded by PMG are specimens and proofs from the private banks. In many cases, there are only one or two graded notes of a particular example. This highest denomination banknotes (100 to 1,000 bolivares) have strong collector demand but are in short supply.
